What Is AVID?!

Have questions about AVID? Here is everything you need to know!

What is AVID?
As defined by the AVID Center, AVID  is "a college readiness system for elementary through higher education that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change."

Goddard is an AVID certified School. Each year Goddard's AVID program is reviewed for adherence to the 11 AVID Essentials. If the school demonstrates proficiency towards meeting the essentials, we receive certification from the AVID Center.

The  AVID Essentials include: student selection that focuses on students with academic potential who would benefit from AVID support to improve their academic record. students and staff who choose to participate in the AVID program. creating an AVID elective class that is an integral part of the school day. a rigorous course of study that will enable students to meet the requirements for university enrollment. WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading) strategies  trained tutors who help students access rigorous curriculum.  continuous monitoring of implementation and results to ensure student success. staff development and providing resources to meet program costs.

Student Expectations

Grades: AVID students are expected to maintain a grade of 70% or higher in all of their classes, especially in their core classes. Students are required and expected to attend after-school tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays as necessary to keep their grades above 70% (C-).

AVID Tutorials: AVID students are required to come to the AVID class on Mondays and Wednesdays prepared with their Tutorial Form completed.

AVID Binder: Students are expected to carry a 2 inch (or larger) binder organized according to AVID guidelines. Students should carry the binder everyday and in every class. This is non-negotiable.

Cornell Notes: Mainly used during a class lecture, a class power point, a class reading, or a movie containing information for which the student must be responsible. To receive full credit, students must have the notes completed in the correct format.

Weekly Reflections: Students will complete a reflection of learning as assigned by their AVID elective teachers.

Assignment Notebooks/Agendas: Students must write any homework, tests, quizzes, projects (etc.) every day in their agendas.
